I never in a thousand years would have guessed that I would make not one, but TWO wedding cake toppers in my lifetime. After making a <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2012/12/handmade-bird-wedding-topper.html">bird topper for my wedding</a>, my friend Amanda asked me if I would make a book inspired cake topper for her wedding.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBOR8ZE5Q_dhYyy-_AfwoDqLFu0OglzU5glgaGUuskLpRlkoYT6WaNTw5ZieBHT2WgHNG4e5zel9-URSFQmKrjCIBUanawsS8P19imZwleVlUxAF2JaMTcwH0d1k2YbVjTVPyQB8WinfY/s1600/Book+Wedding+Topper_10_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBOR8ZE5Q_dhYyy-_AfwoDqLFu0OglzU5glgaGUuskLpRlkoYT6WaNTw5ZieBHT2WgHNG4e5zel9-URSFQmKrjCIBUanawsS8P19imZwleVlUxAF2JaMTcwH0d1k2YbVjTVPyQB8WinfY/s1600/Book+Wedding+Topper_10_1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Of course, I said yes.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5utauYdCuNW_UlhE9tPpC1cN1SzAo1q7q6kf1k9rpQzGhbrkshdT5Cf-qcHZvtL8DdL4fq2Q0hKirb6WI-2y6_k9trrDjc9uLwjnK360cXDE_LSuYirIToBoPMQeY0NDH3cjfk7tw-00/s1600/Book-Wedding-Topper.gif" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5utauYdCuNW_UlhE9tPpC1cN1SzAo1q7q6kf1k9rpQzGhbrkshdT5Cf-qcHZvtL8DdL4fq2Q0hKirb6WI-2y6_k9trrDjc9uLwjnK360cXDE_LSuYirIToBoPMQeY0NDH3cjfk7tw-00/s1600/Book-Wedding-Topper.gif" /></a><br />
<br />
The topper is made with wooden books and a small wooden stand (from Michaels) that are painted with acrylic paint. I chose the books based on the couple's favorites and incorporated their wedding date and initials.<br />

The color is Midnight Dream by Behr and makes a huge difference in the space. All in all, we've made a good amount of progress in the room, namely...<br />

Now, I NEED HELP. Part of me really wants to paint the whole room Navy and part of me is... scared. I could go with a lighter neutral (probably gray) on the other walls, but I'm just not sure. I made a little GIF of what it might look like to paint the walls gray...<br />

<br />
Usually I reserve insideways for just the crafty side of my life, but today I've decided to make an exception. I'm very excited to share my second of three Doctoral recitals at the University of California San Diego <b>January 28th at 8PM in the <a href="http://musicweb.ucsd.edu/directions/directions-pages.php?i=601">Conrad Prebys Music Center Concert Hall</a></b>!<br />
<br />
For me, performances are a very special opportunity to share music I love and provide a space for ideas to flourish. In this concert I'm confronting a question many of us music lovers take for granted: <b>is live performance essential? </b><br />
<br />
This recital offers five pieces and their various answers to this question. Focusing on the very physical nature of sound and its expression in space, the full realizations of these works are only available in the moments they are exchanged between the performer and audience. A case for live performance is made not with the risk of failure or presentation of the performer as hero, but with compositional ideas that live fully only within the moment of performance.<br />
<br />
Burn Again with a Low Blue Flame - <a href="http://www.anniegosfield.com/">Annie Gosfield</a><br />
Vessel - <a href="http://carolinelouisemiller.com/">Caroline Miller</a><br />
Durations 2 - Morton Feldman<br />
The New Right of Spring - <a href="http://www.paulineoliveros.us/">Pauline Oliveros</a><br />
Charles Curtis - <a href="http://alucier.web.wesleyan.edu/">Alvin Lucier</a><br />
<br />
My hope is the weird and wonderful music you can hear at my recital will not only provide an exciting musical experience, but carry on after the music has stopped through interesting conversation and thought. <br />
<br />
So if you're in the San Diego area on January 28th, come on out! Hear some strange sounds and say hello :)Jennifer Bewersehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01132122273107101332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502330229894959102.post-68928055411100395372014-01-10T08:00:00.000-08:002014-01-10T08:00:07.384-08:00Pretty Small Things: A Christmas Faux Moose Head<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdTY10niq_bSeaWVxF6nAyfSjVfFg5lJ6Pa4knsmNltwX-rR5mtUG10T6Cj0qOPAZXlGP7b8kuzjW0Mm7YT03s2wTz09sCowkZ2e7g83pLiEXu_VZtaNPzbXTWqyGZg0BOdZdfRIShhGk/s1600/Faux+Moose+Head_2_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdTY10niq_bSeaWVxF6nAyfSjVfFg5lJ6Pa4knsmNltwX-rR5mtUG10T6Cj0qOPAZXlGP7b8kuzjW0Mm7YT03s2wTz09sCowkZ2e7g83pLiEXu_VZtaNPzbXTWqyGZg0BOdZdfRIShhGk/s1600/Faux+Moose+Head_2_1.jpg" /></a><br />

I loooove putting the little finishing touches on a room. It might be my favorite part of the whole process! Well... that and finding furniture on craigslist... and right after a new coat of paint... and all of the other steps. Ok I love the whole process, but finishing touches are great :)<br />

It does a great job of drawing the eye up past the TV, balancing the other tall things in the room, and making the whole fireplace more of a focal point. We miiiiight add some sort of mount to the back of it - something like <a href="http://www.remodelista.com/posts/steal-this-look-fuzzco-office-in-charleston">this (scroll down in the post)</a>, but painted white to match the moose - just to give it a little more oomph. We shall see...<br />

<br />
Instagram has to be my favorite form of social media. I've never been one to make photo albums, so I love being able to look back at the <a href="http://instagram.com/jen_insideways">year in photos</a>! <br />
<br />
I usually take photos of daily life or little projects I'm working on. Oh right, I also take FAR TOO MANY cat photos. They're so darn cute I just can't help myself.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnG0L4j5SievBXcC0d_YTnt3LFAPhQlOw723mzV8v7m8fz8SPlMYuLf0I9A2ypJS3O83IxZ-O-oCeSg9iylOX90MV8GZUWvTDJfxbja1yxnnK40kxCUe6S1KFYLrt-XPZdnksM6FSyddE/s1600/2013+Instagrams+2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnG0L4j5SievBXcC0d_YTnt3LFAPhQlOw723mzV8v7m8fz8SPlMYuLf0I9A2ypJS3O83IxZ-O-oCeSg9iylOX90MV8GZUWvTDJfxbja1yxnnK40kxCUe6S1KFYLrt-XPZdnksM6FSyddE/s1600/2013+Instagrams+2.jpg" /></a><br />

It may or may not have taken 14 months, but I've finally covered up the second cable box in my living room! Forget ushering in a new year, THIS is a reason to celebrate!<br />

I used the same technique as last time (<a href="http://www.insideways.com/2012/09/beat-blinking-lights.html">here's a full tutorial</a>) and I'm as happy with the result as before. Take a look...<br />

<br />
As someone whose never been able to maintain a scrapbook or journal, one of my favorite parts of blogging is being able to look back over my projects. 2013 was a year where I decided to blog less, but <i>love</i> what I blogged more and I ended up with some posts I'm really proud of. Let's take a look!<br />
<br />

My office is still a work in progress (all paint color suggestions welcome!), but is the perfect sunny spot to get my craft on.<br />

A total dream came true this year when the first floor of my rental was featured on <a href="http://www.abeautifulmess.com/">A Beautiful Mes</a>s, my alltime <i>favorite</i> blog.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

Before this year, I had never seriously decorated a bathroom in my rental before. SO worth it!<br />

After searching online for a macrame plant hanger, I gave up and just made my own. Sometimes you just gotta get your hands dirty to get what you want.<br />

I was always a little scared to apply wall decals, but it turns out it's not very difficult. Here's how I did it.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.insideways.com/2013/06/cleaning-vintage-chair.html">Tips for Cleaning Vintage Chairs</a></span></div>

<br />
Caigslisted furniture doesn't always come in the perfect condition, but before you decide to reupholster or paint, try a little cleaning. Here's how I cleaned this green vintage chair.<br />

So there it is - a year of my favorite posts!<br />
If you're curious, here are my reviews for <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2011/12/reflecting-on-2011.html">2011</a> and <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2013/01/2012-in-review.html">2012</a>.<br />
<br />
BUT... Here's the big question, and I would be SO GRATEFUL for your feedback...<br />

<br />
I'm a little late to the Thanksgiving blogging party, but I couldn't go without posting a photo of this <a href="http://www.abeautifulmess.com/2013/05/mojito-jello-shots.html">Mojito Jello Shot recipe I tried from A Beautiful Mess</a>. It was SO good, super pretty, and not very diffiult to make. I highly recommend trying it for your holiday parties (I'm definitely going to make them again for New Year's Eve).<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcSLIOQY4RjNUXPNlpL67OEynQtR18ZAcNFlwYeH2pUmXq_Pqulr346ptkv_OALqgS99KqIMSPQs48RTMGAlziI3AmAZd0WcVsDB-sMCvCMZ_tJ1BOlvr8kBkY_hGnPLFlHb5hPIfmWJc/s1600/Guest+Kitchen+Labels+copy+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcSLIOQY4RjNUXPNlpL67OEynQtR18ZAcNFlwYeH2pUmXq_Pqulr346ptkv_OALqgS99KqIMSPQs48RTMGAlziI3AmAZd0WcVsDB-sMCvCMZ_tJ1BOlvr8kBkY_hGnPLFlHb5hPIfmWJc/s1600/Guest+Kitchen+Labels+copy+copy.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
And now for the tip! I love having friends over to cook for the holidays, but it can be tricky to show everyone where all of the cooking supplies are. Sticking labeled post-it notes on cabinets and drawers is easy to do and makes kitchen navigation easier for your guest chefs.<br />
<br />
Here's to good eats and happy holidays for all!Jennifer Bewersehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01132122273107101332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502330229894959102.post-90644558048054018172013-12-18T10:42:00.000-08:002013-12-18T10:42:09.175-08:00Homemade Christmas Ornaments 2013<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii5jq41mdMx9_u6dEOV-EgAlDY0i2fkb9VvfWwsiAeYSWmhP3VsqGOWNjIuEf72tmFxaP0CbZe33xwppk8CGqmbNB16Q7ppd1wxTtS9Mc6sfpEtQse58jar0o6QdWiRzJsCaUm-DdyXd0/s1600/DIY+Ornament_2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii5jq41mdMx9_u6dEOV-EgAlDY0i2fkb9VvfWwsiAeYSWmhP3VsqGOWNjIuEf72tmFxaP0CbZe33xwppk8CGqmbNB16Q7ppd1wxTtS9Mc6sfpEtQse58jar0o6QdWiRzJsCaUm-DdyXd0/s1600/DIY+Ornament_2.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Since Tim and I do a lot traveling over the holidays, it can be tricky to make and keep annual traditions. But, for the past three years we've managed to keep my absolute favorite tradition - we each make a Christmas Tree ornament!<br />
<br />
This year we made a "couple's costume"-style ornament, where each of our ornaments stand alone, but are meant to go together. Check these snowball fighting reindeer out :)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5dAbzpgD_uHnHSSzgwWj5HfpPk8DJcFio5tZxE48tYvyc0PyqWJEgCfstOCeh7U1XXES5xy7Q3VIs3yzJtVCigZywZWQHypjWmQiewk_cxoJ_RGFHSezkeJzqX0gZXcB9qId2Xu1Q7Z0/s1600/DIY+Ornament_4_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5dAbzpgD_uHnHSSzgwWj5HfpPk8DJcFio5tZxE48tYvyc0PyqWJEgCfstOCeh7U1XXES5xy7Q3VIs3yzJtVCigZywZWQHypjWmQiewk_cxoJ_RGFHSezkeJzqX0gZXcB9qId2Xu1Q7Z0/s1600/DIY+Ornament_4_1.jpg" /></a><br />

<br />
A couple of weeks ago I got an email from UncommonGoods asking if I would be interested in trying out one of the products they're highlighting in their stocking stuffer collection (you can check them <a href="http://www.uncommongoods.com/occasions/christmas-gifts/christmas-gifts">all out here</a>). It was super easy to say yes because 1) they have TONS of cool stuff and 2) those products are made in harmony with the environment and without harm to animals or people. Yay for everyone!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZLBAoCwxaXpJXuxD2XsFGEB5D9vKDNSOtNhj8kBlXjaqgTie4Q1qhisFz-9h4DhXT9N7YDGLskQZjJx0pv2OBrBHdMyq1IMSjV9lzugINACLYl_rGWLAyoDUUooFMP_J7rV3G1AQ70Cs/s1600/aquafarm_1_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZLBAoCwxaXpJXuxD2XsFGEB5D9vKDNSOtNhj8kBlXjaqgTie4Q1qhisFz-9h4DhXT9N7YDGLskQZjJx0pv2OBrBHdMyq1IMSjV9lzugINACLYl_rGWLAyoDUUooFMP_J7rV3G1AQ70Cs/s1600/aquafarm_1_1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
After a struggle to decide between the Aquafarm or a Pick Punch (it makes guitar picks out of credit cards or ANYTHING, what?! So cool! <a href="http://www.uncommongoods.com/product/pick-punch">More on it here</a>.), I chose the <a href="http://www.uncommongoods.com/product/aquafarm">Aquafarm</a> - a fish tank that grows plants through hydroponics.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi__YIgIWFLtDMrZ5WrWdJvXPQ2c9MqX-O8mprU8cNUobJirQIWZDV1Kgrgpkf328GKEBJUSnqGzQ9i9VrSYhduF3b8CsVGDrBOcFD_zt9NYajbJZa0OROupwMIp-naskeA3WMPkNyZltg/s1600/aquafarm_5_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi__YIgIWFLtDMrZ5WrWdJvXPQ2c9MqX-O8mprU8cNUobJirQIWZDV1Kgrgpkf328GKEBJUSnqGzQ9i9VrSYhduF3b8CsVGDrBOcFD_zt9NYajbJZa0OROupwMIp-naskeA3WMPkNyZltg/s1600/aquafarm_5_1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Setting up the Aquafarm was pretty easy overall and the instructions and packaging were beautiful and easy to use. Gordon was completely enraptured by our new fish Harold...<br />
<br />
I also followed the instructions that recommended adding a snail to the tank to clean algae. We named him Captain Algae. Unfortunately... he didn't make it. I'm pretty sure there just wasn't enough algae for him to eat, so I suggest waiting to buy a snail until your tank has been going for a while.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7S6cotYSpLFVsM8R-rUm6p_LNIo7J3zHkwK9r8NGjqEHc92jbK_L0M23KuXasntbmJ5h7YOvl8we31yKyI5pG12DbRU4Z9I8QDcI7hMK_W3X1LP8lkKBdTRKPXjzwQ_wwjzZHzfIDh48/s1600/aquafarm_12+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7S6cotYSpLFVsM8R-rUm6p_LNIo7J3zHkwK9r8NGjqEHc92jbK_L0M23KuXasntbmJ5h7YOvl8we31yKyI5pG12DbRU4Z9I8QDcI7hMK_W3X1LP8lkKBdTRKPXjzwQ_wwjzZHzfIDh48/s1600/aquafarm_12+copy.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Once everything was set up, I just left it to grow! Over the course of two weeks...<br />
<br />

<br />
We grew a wild mane of wheat grass!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmsYb3sctx_-a3rd3CHeT8wQ0lmaCHpUBOzX3hL6Cno2b4lCw4fipPJHm_MjsKE3f4Y-bL3pLFDoVazHfKq1Rre_YTFHmwjx5MrENjCWbBWwo55E2I5fvY2lwurzSfzzkE-il71BKhn98/s1600/Aquafarm.gif" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmsYb3sctx_-a3rd3CHeT8wQ0lmaCHpUBOzX3hL6Cno2b4lCw4fipPJHm_MjsKE3f4Y-bL3pLFDoVazHfKq1Rre_YTFHmwjx5MrENjCWbBWwo55E2I5fvY2lwurzSfzzkE-il71BKhn98/s1600/Aquafarm.gif" /></a><br />
<br />
I'm also really impressed by the tank's sleek design. About one-third of their collection incorporates recycled and/or upcycled materials, but they don't sacrifice good looks. So, I feel good about my environmental impact and my kitchen bay window looks beautiful. Again, everybody wins!<br />

So head your internet selves over to UncommonGoods if you're still in the market for Christmas gifts. If you're into the monogrammed trend right now, they even have a bunch of personalized goods you can check out <a href="http://www.uncommongoods.com/gifts/collections/personalized-gifts">here</a>.<br />

I'm itching to try another plant in my Aquafarm. What do you think I should grow? Basil? Cilantro? Mint? <br />
Since I started blogging back in 2011, I've slowly but steadily worked to improve my photography skills. I started with an iPhone and Picasa, but worked my way up to using a DSLR and Photoshop with my <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2011/09/31-days-challenge.html">31 Days to Better Home Photos</a> challenge.<br />
<br />
This year, I was finally able to save up enough for a beautiful Canon 6D DSLR - a camera that can help me reach my new goals and continue growing. So, I thought I'd share a little post of my current camera gear!<br />
<br />
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi8YyOP8C2ZdhsMmUs3tZpwsrIi3mGwBZ24_Ar9eUzQa1qt02do5SuAZFhyS1jznTlAjkZyCen6Ti7yEU-SKS38xR6oMZv3cTR0r5veg0QdvCHkyD2I7FamdX7PMP0oxRc7NOsNq6lUQw/s1600/Blogging+Camera+Gear.jpg" /><br />

I use <a href="http://www.photoshop.com/">Photoshop</a> and <a href="http://thepioneerwoman.com/photography/2010/03/actions-update-2/">Pioneer Woman Actions</a> to edit my photos</div>
<br />
So why the zoo photos? A super fun way to get to know a new camera is to take it out on a little camera date somewhere pretty. Great places are the beach, a garden, the woods, or... the zoo! My favorite is the zoo because the animals move around and really make things a challenge (but not too hard). These photos were taken on a cloudy day at the San Diego Zoo.<br />
<br />
Stick to the outdoors where there will be plenty of light, but where there is also shade so you won't have to spend all of your time dealing with harsh direct sunlight. You're almost guaranteed to come out with a few new favorite photos! <br />
<br />
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB-LaBoL_avbK7dsy_ycY5NALVo8YN7x2fIsIFR7Mp15LpZbrujW3JW8v1oDQvV4mM12ttsaWhk0vhJONvrvbHu6JMvxwrvMrZyyrnTDedZfwMTXhylhnibSaJ8Ff_m7Rh5L9W42vtGr0/s1600/Zoo+Trip_41+copy.jpg" /><br />
<br />
This monkey is totally sitting on a hippo's back, just FYI...<br />

This is a happysad post. A few of you may have noticed a total lack of Madeline on the blog or my instagram over the last several months. After a long struggle with kidney disease, little Madeline just couldn't make it anymore. We loved the hell out of that cat and she is missed like crazy.<br />

After grieving/healing we decided to bring another cat into our family. Last weekend, on our one-year-anniversary, we popped on over to our local humane society. There, we met Gordon...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjis6wvFzaSeL_32jBUl-oK7i6b6Wki0MMRM4D8WUbA6VhV-rR0LQ-A6Gd3_BaBiEEbnRh6IUvN5XyouN3elgQOsQJMqCxp0LEJ2MBHmWUGHAV2TAcLNaJdcXOFfpl1yzT697PjzdVhIV8/s1600/Gordon+Orange+Cat_1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjis6wvFzaSeL_32jBUl-oK7i6b6Wki0MMRM4D8WUbA6VhV-rR0LQ-A6Gd3_BaBiEEbnRh6IUvN5XyouN3elgQOsQJMqCxp0LEJ2MBHmWUGHAV2TAcLNaJdcXOFfpl1yzT697PjzdVhIV8/s1600/Gordon+Orange+Cat_1+copy.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
He's a one-year-old little orangecat and I swear we didn't choose him because he looks like Maggie's twin. Really, he was just the most incredibly social and sweet cat we'd ever met (besides Maggie) and we just couldn't leave him at the humane society! We're learning that Gordon is a total cuddle-bug and has a weird oral fixation. He seriously licks everything. Like a little puppy. It's strange and adorable.<br />

He and Maggie are slowly but surely becoming little cat friends. There's officially no hissing and touching each other seems ok!<br />

That's the latest news in Jen&Tim land. This post took extra long to write because Gordon kept jumping into my lap and poking at the computer screen. The cute is overwhelming. Keep an eye out for too many photos of Gordon on my <a href="http://instagram.com/jen_insideways">instagram account,</a> I may or may not have already posted 5 as of writing this post...Jennifer Bewersehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01132122273107101332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502330229894959102.post-76286695972793328602013-09-29T14:30:00.001-07:002013-09-29T14:30:30.439-07:00Bedroom Update<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-Hz41-50gcXz4ihKoPzW1SPZQyjIjPMD71ub5eI5AN4Q4WoVIb-2c5gYRH7ZKMTSAeEx1fWo4IHogSWxbyEIdG3aTsLMIexmPKxTC941461R_EAQyHRIBzWfLSLqBybRYLMgxBqu5ANc/s1600/Vintage+Bedroom_5_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-Hz41-50gcXz4ihKoPzW1SPZQyjIjPMD71ub5eI5AN4Q4WoVIb-2c5gYRH7ZKMTSAeEx1fWo4IHogSWxbyEIdG3aTsLMIexmPKxTC941461R_EAQyHRIBzWfLSLqBybRYLMgxBqu5ANc/s1600/Vintage+Bedroom_5_1.jpg" /></a><br />

Lately, life has been slow in the home-improvements department of chateau Jen&Tim. A lot of projects have been started, but nothing is finished. It's one of those seasons where other priorities are... well priorities. So while I'd usually wait until there is more of something to show you, I thought I would just jump in and share a little of the progress we've made in decorating our master bedroom...<br />
<br />
Here are two before pictures to get you oriented :)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_PepUwHIZMeRrs9Qyn3iJbP2Lv65smPc__OvsWbcR_ZtV8E0XYj05FhVSBRv9WafjDQeLGddOoaOZ4gz0wolXQ04yiI4oHvZWA2s9HzaB_n5F6ovF9S3FznYrzcG_v-l_WCt3ZaZ9xUA/s1600/Townhouse+Apartment_17+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_PepUwHIZMeRrs9Qyn3iJbP2Lv65smPc__OvsWbcR_ZtV8E0XYj05FhVSBRv9WafjDQeLGddOoaOZ4gz0wolXQ04yiI4oHvZWA2s9HzaB_n5F6ovF9S3FznYrzcG_v-l_WCt3ZaZ9xUA/s1600/Townhouse+Apartment_17+copy.jpg" /></a><br />

<br />
Since then we've added <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2012/12/i-have-bedroom-eyes.html">a huge brass bed</a>, <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2013/05/the-rug-hunt-ends.html">moved the orange living room rug upstairs</a>...<br />
<br />

<br />
... bought some plants, and got cute little nightstands off of craigslist. They were about $120 for the pair, which is more than I usually spend on craigslist, BUT our bed is unusually tall. Do you know how hard it is to find matching, cute, affordable nightstands that are more than 27 inches tall?? Hard my friends.<br />
<br />
<i><b>Search word Tips for Nightstands on craigslist:</b> "nightstand | nightstands | night stand | night stands | end table | end tables | side table | side tables". So many terms that basically mean the SAME THING.</i><br />
<br />
As you can see, I've also tested out a swatch of navy blue paint for the walls. I'm sold on the color, but painting day hasn't made its way around yet :)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS2xc-Zj6eTwr_korhgg2zNVoRXGCAAKp797beTnGdZxluBfR36Rc2t-niiV5VQ18ovV-he889tpp5UACgTIHhgKn2PRfSrx4HJO4pkyv_MdMvu4qpwOtLB50-RlnEZxPtFtr-OBrrTys/s1600/Vintage+Bedroom_4_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS2xc-Zj6eTwr_korhgg2zNVoRXGCAAKp797beTnGdZxluBfR36Rc2t-niiV5VQ18ovV-he889tpp5UACgTIHhgKn2PRfSrx4HJO4pkyv_MdMvu4qpwOtLB50-RlnEZxPtFtr-OBrrTys/s1600/Vintage+Bedroom_4_1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
To add more functionality to Tim's closet, we moved a cute little wicker dresser inside ($50 from craigslist). So what if it's from a set of furniture for little girls? <i>No one has to know</i> ;)<br />
<br />

Next steps are painting, curtains, finding the perfect duvet cover, and bringing all the little details together.<br />

So what do you think? Is it a room you'd sleep in? <br />
This past new year's day <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2013/01/happy-new-year.html">my resolution was to learn how to have a smaller impact on the environment</a>. Since then, I've figured some stuff out that involves adjusting the items I buy and a worm farm (oh yes, a worm farm), so today I decided to get off my virtual butt and post about one area of progress - recycling.<br />
<br />
Tim and I are adjusting our habits by recycling and trying to buy products packaged in recyclable materials. We sort of knew what we could recycle, but couldn't always keep track... <a href="http://www.ci.oceanside.ca.us/civica/filebank/blobdload.asp?BlobID=27944">The city I live in has a helpful chart</a>, but it's not very attractive. Since all of my experience tells me it's way easier to use/love/engage with something beautiful in my home, I decided to make my own chart!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfUga5EhRry5Tx_fxb61urhFw_WAshakmI5jcSWOuMvTcxeHGMg0y6-d4PAHWKdmYcDpJcgTo12yE4CWeqaOK5aQ385eqKL_89Lp4kFq6F_NQErRpa5h99URa1hZ4TzmOzMCRRbEKwEY4/s1600/Recycle+Poster_1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfUga5EhRry5Tx_fxb61urhFw_WAshakmI5jcSWOuMvTcxeHGMg0y6-d4PAHWKdmYcDpJcgTo12yE4CWeqaOK5aQ385eqKL_89Lp4kFq6F_NQErRpa5h99URa1hZ4TzmOzMCRRbEKwEY4/s1600/Recycle+Poster_1+copy.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I made in in photoshop using a bamboo wacom tablet and Bebas font. Now it hangs right above our trashcan using the <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2012/11/dining-nook-revisited.html">same method of hanging as our shark print</a>. Love.<br />
<br />
This little poster lists all of the things you can recycle and what you need to throw away. It especially helps Tim and I remember which numbered plastics we can recycle. It doesn't include a list of what can be composted (or worm composted), but you can bet your bet your reusable water bottle that I'll be bringing one of those to insideways soon :)<br />
<br />
WARNING: your city might have different recycling regulations, so check before you follow this list.<br />
<br />

<br />
Our handy dandy trashcan has two bins inside, one for trash and one for recycling. The recycling bin is smaller than the trash one, but I'm hoping we can switch their uses in the near future. Did you know that <a href="http://www5.sfgov.org/sf_news/2012/10/recycling-program-mayor-announces-city-leads-america-in-recycling.html">San Francisco recycles/composts 80% of its waste</a> and <a href="http://phys.org/news/2012-10-sweden-norway-trash-lots.html">Sweden is so waste efficient that they're buying other countrys' garbage</a>?<br />
<br />

On a lark, I put together a little video of Tim and I snorkeling off the coast in Maui. As usual, the video took a lot longer to make than I thought, but I love how it turned out. Let's be honest, if I don't make the footage cute, I never look at it again :P<br />
<br />
We took the video with a rented underwater point and shoot and I used iMovie to stitch 'er all together. <a href="http://cimryadeal.bandcamp.com/track/octopus-garden">Music by Cimrya Deal - Octopus's Garden</a>. Last week Tim and I treated ourselves to an amazing vacation in Hawaii. It's definitely as beautiful as they say and we had an amazing time.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYbJ1U9vPuslg0CWJqhpV-t8GlkINIDF6i72TE9uiZ5ufnH_aUxt_d6zeLzp1BLsU8oYFewgpAyDJc_Ok3d4PiUVyNQClHK1wIgT124ZqwblbMREoeZUgsEqwjs4ps5D3_jDw-3-DgXO0/s1600/Snorkle+5.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYbJ1U9vPuslg0CWJqhpV-t8GlkINIDF6i72TE9uiZ5ufnH_aUxt_d6zeLzp1BLsU8oYFewgpAyDJc_Ok3d4PiUVyNQClHK1wIgT124ZqwblbMREoeZUgsEqwjs4ps5D3_jDw-3-DgXO0/s1600/Snorkle+5.jpg" /></a><br />

<br />
Snorkeling was probably my favorite activity, even though I burned myself HORRIBLY on the very first day. Wear sunscreen kids, and for god sake reapply.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF8GcF5GweF4UMZ2uSs3GXQrw3UhlrwjhdWy8jhHwfC6CG6TgzkQuFpBFo9hq5Eh0YD3utmn3nSEh9oZfV9XSqMd3PR7mlTeEyDxIRWbfXyU22g9xTqFt0ZqK_ntNdLEGsLNtqn2hqEBQ/s1600/Snorkle+1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF8GcF5GweF4UMZ2uSs3GXQrw3UhlrwjhdWy8jhHwfC6CG6TgzkQuFpBFo9hq5Eh0YD3utmn3nSEh9oZfV9XSqMd3PR7mlTeEyDxIRWbfXyU22g9xTqFt0ZqK_ntNdLEGsLNtqn2hqEBQ/s1600/Snorkle+1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Second best or maybe even tied for very best activity was the Road to Hana. It's a whole day adventure and I highly recommend buying the <a href="https://maps.google.com/maps?q=shell+gas+station+maui&ll=20.888324,-156.466599&spn=0.491401,0.678406&fb=1&gl=us&hq=shell+gas+station&hnear=0x79552b4acc4c61dd:0xcc43e741dc113e7f,Maui&cid=0,0,12856791748753470271&t=m&z=11&iwloc=A">accompanying CD from the lady at the Shell Station nearby</a>. Also, if you're someone who suffers from car sickness (*points to self*) you should drive. This road is not for the faint of stomach.<br />

Because we're those kinds of tourists (no shame), we went to the <a href="http://www.feastatlele.com/">The Feast at Lele Lu'au</a>. It was SO FUN and there was a fire eater for the big finale!! The booze is included, which never hurts ;)<br />

There are several things I'm super happy I got/brought, so if you're planning a beachy vacation take note:<br />
<ul>
<li>Snorkels - we could have rented, but germs. Plus <a href="http://www.target.com/p/speedo-adult-expedition-mask-and-snorkel-set/-/A-13916819?reco=Rec|pdp|13916819|ClickEV|item_page.new_vertical_1&lnk=Rec|pdp|ClickEV|item_page.new_vertical_1">these worked SUPER well for us</a>.</li>
<li>Underwater Smartphone Case - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dicapac-WP-i10-Waterproof-Case-iPhone/dp/B008FR3RC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376949290&sr=8-1&keywords=Dicapac+case">this one never leaked and is really affordable</a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lets-Pretend-This-Never-Happened/dp/0425261018/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376949309&sr=8-1&keywords=lets+pretend+this+never+happened"><i>Let's Pretend This Never Happened</i> by Jenny Lawson</a> - everyone needs a beach book and this is one of the best books I've read in a long time.</li>
<li>Swimsuit Coverup - I made my own based on <a href="http://www.maykool.com/one-piece-swimsuit-white-v-neck-stylish-beach-cover-up-swimsuit-004374.html">this one by MayKool</a>. It's really easy to make and avoids the crappy polyester fabric MayKool uses (why MayKool why?)</li>

Mostly we just did <i>whatever we wanted</i> because vacations are supposed to be relaxing (see Tim? I'm learning). <br />
Last week the kind people at Martha Stewart sent me a copy of the July/August Martha Stewart Living Magazine. It is PACKED with inspiration! One feature in particular caught my eye - an updated take on friendship bracelets.<br />
<br />
I'm totally one of those girls who made friendship bracelets for all. of. her. friends. That's probably why I was so cool in elementary school (read not cool, but very crafty).<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif3kXi7QsDuQPuviaw6RTOHSnwBEz01VIpMoNTp69i1BEDpx7CRBCly9ayspTcl-lml1krnW5IS3NUnDzl7MWeFctCbc2niJTVDgCDGRDpsKq6iDONpp42AQRIPTrFMhXHpTKDrBD7sLY/s1600/Martha+Stewart+Living_3.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif3kXi7QsDuQPuviaw6RTOHSnwBEz01VIpMoNTp69i1BEDpx7CRBCly9ayspTcl-lml1krnW5IS3NUnDzl7MWeFctCbc2niJTVDgCDGRDpsKq6iDONpp42AQRIPTrFMhXHpTKDrBD7sLY/s1600/Martha+Stewart+Living_3.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I decided to use my friendship bracelet <strike>skills</strike> enthusiasm to make a friendship keyring. I started with three 80 inch strands folded in half around the key ring - two cotton strands and one straw twine. I chose the mix of cotton and straw because I liked how the fibers looked together, but if I had to do it again, I would choose strands of the same stiffness - the straw twine was a little tricky to work with.<br />
<br />
I started with a regular ole knot then followed the Martha Stewart Living instructions for a quarter inch of chinese staircase. Then I did a few rounds of the chevron pattern. Once I had enough of that, I divided the six strands in two and did two braids. I ended the whole bit with another basic knot, snipped the extra twine, then unwound the strands that made up the tail, so they would be more fluffy.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvqPk5VQvvPUzTT-JgvUiIXAQ43z6xXm4gjL4ykdKYpRauDYy25BqgDiHf1vrUYccvnHC3s8pnzXRmK9HqeIkD52yEA3M9_p0WCMQpXbXH6uyl6gPd6eIfQ7XbYKUewHbKk3ZsHuIWdj8/s1600/Martha+Stewart+Living_1_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvqPk5VQvvPUzTT-JgvUiIXAQ43z6xXm4gjL4ykdKYpRauDYy25BqgDiHf1vrUYccvnHC3s8pnzXRmK9HqeIkD52yEA3M9_p0WCMQpXbXH6uyl6gPd6eIfQ7XbYKUewHbKk3ZsHuIWdj8/s1600/Martha+Stewart+Living_1_1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
It was super fun to tinker with friendship bracelets in a fresh new way - so much nostalgia! I'm glad the Martha Stewart Living magazine reminded me of how great these little knots were. Any avid friendship braceleters out there?Jennifer Bewersehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01132122273107101332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502330229894959102.post-64754763762285414132013-08-11T19:08:00.000-07:002013-08-11T19:08:46.999-07:00Tips for Applying Gold Dot Decals<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNlp2yx2NLhMWciISCzlheoDARPw5QP60Li0UVav2KrutD5ewKVIhSMLkBP5PwHVClRp6LMoxtnAF2vgCHmquqqZ8Y3OYVKJL0U90otWbU5-9tGDB78mE2pUuDNfzs3aC820IlaxQtDMc/s1600/Bathroom+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNlp2yx2NLhMWciISCzlheoDARPw5QP60Li0UVav2KrutD5ewKVIhSMLkBP5PwHVClRp6LMoxtnAF2vgCHmquqqZ8Y3OYVKJL0U90otWbU5-9tGDB78mE2pUuDNfzs3aC820IlaxQtDMc/s1600/Bathroom+copy.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
When I initially started giving this little bathroom some umph, I envisioned the back wall covered in gold x's, like a big cute cross stitch reference. Needless to say, that didn't work out. Oh, and there were tears involved in the not-working-out of it. As a DIYer I know the feeling of "now for plan B" VERY well.<br />
<br />
Lucky for me, plan B ended up being better than plan A ever could have been - metallic gold vinyl polka dots.<br />
<br />
Even though I've already done a whole bathroom reveal, I thought I'd go a little more into how I applied the dots. Here's what I used:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWgwEBjv-P2ePcOsvgLYyY8RDerjxlJG7KHdU7vUK0rdNAVIUQ8kw4zD2tN1ml3-VYQjBOo2RCrFO5PHFYvHuzA0EuShA2jCaXRGpMG8dYg-tECX-F5w9He5EwW18kuUc-CJUIl0Yy6U8/s1600/How+to+Apply+Gold+Dot+Decals+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWgwEBjv-P2ePcOsvgLYyY8RDerjxlJG7KHdU7vUK0rdNAVIUQ8kw4zD2tN1ml3-VYQjBOo2RCrFO5PHFYvHuzA0EuShA2jCaXRGpMG8dYg-tECX-F5w9He5EwW18kuUc-CJUIl0Yy6U8/s1600/How+to+Apply+Gold+Dot+Decals+copy.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Gold dot decals cut into individual squares, a wall-mountable laser level, and tape measurer.<br />
<br />
A little more about the dots: I bought two sheets of <a href="http://www.wallsneedlove.com/polka-dot-vinyl-wall-decals/#.Ugg_LGTF3kM">2" gold dots from Walls Need Love</a>. I definitely could have just bought one sheet, but I'm glad that I played it safe. The decals are completely removable, which is GREAT for renters (and yes, I've tested it).<br />
<br />
The easiest way to apply the dots was by peeling off only half of the paper, positioning the dot, then removing the rest of the paper.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7CbkNRqBBtcI9cONaxtbPJ2M2gYexaOnw-NL8DnHdlwrOvrIY4kSRMT7Lef30WM5tyPTenqyVBZAYa_9yz0w6sAk4qtDHdzMhKEcRljjrpQEfxpQYxkJcMYC-b5H5RPhy0eLpuobUvFY/s1600/How+to+Apply+Gold+Dot+Decals_1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7CbkNRqBBtcI9cONaxtbPJ2M2gYexaOnw-NL8DnHdlwrOvrIY4kSRMT7Lef30WM5tyPTenqyVBZAYa_9yz0w6sAk4qtDHdzMhKEcRljjrpQEfxpQYxkJcMYC-b5H5RPhy0eLpuobUvFY/s1600/How+to+Apply+Gold+Dot+Decals_1+copy.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I used the laser level to align the tops of every dot.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF8RUnGBt9zBfoS_Zt56UpZIVtFhMeXzUhhMDDtm4hbFlAOnHrVbDDuOaFD5KENt9sf5yuj0rxGw5NO2q023bZq2s7WZCE3-CxY5IU5xVV5-_WJfV2RF05XkqMRlMN7AMccbqGzyQOz4E/s1600/How-to-Apply-Gold-Dot-Decals_2.gif" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF8RUnGBt9zBfoS_Zt56UpZIVtFhMeXzUhhMDDtm4hbFlAOnHrVbDDuOaFD5KENt9sf5yuj0rxGw5NO2q023bZq2s7WZCE3-CxY5IU5xVV5-_WJfV2RF05XkqMRlMN7AMccbqGzyQOz4E/s1600/How-to-Apply-Gold-Dot-Decals_2.gif" /></a><br />
<br />
For the next dot, I used a spacer (a cut up piece of paper) combined with the laser level. The method was great and went super fast once the first dot of each row was up. My dots were spaced out about 5 inches width-ways and 7 inches height-ways.<br />
<br />

The bathroom was never really a "problem" space, but it was super fun to add some touches of our personalities. Before and after...<br />

With a fresh coat of paint, a few accessories, and cute gold dot decals, this room looks totally fresh. So far, I've only put dots on the back wall. I don't want them to be too overwhelming when you're in there, but it could be fun to dot up another wall... We shall see!<br />

In my humble opinion, every bathroom with guest access should have a few things: soap and towels, extra toilet paper, a plunger, and some kind of air freshener. I won't go into details but NOBODY wants to be caught without these things if they need them. Fun reading material is a bonus.<br />
<br />

That's it! Small but full of fun. So help a girl out, should I add some more dots or is enough enough?<br />

<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9l5_PXTnPghd04Yp8OLrM4mxc99pojbOkuEx49pZZvqm30yP4VbMGe1XLLhi70vwmnS-HMFXD_ikpxWRZUzoBx4_Lg1KJyGh47OB1538L4RV4qJnLAaG_pauJ2ugv2qk5uW_gsDl8A-Q/s1600/Rattan+Counter+Stools_5_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9l5_PXTnPghd04Yp8OLrM4mxc99pojbOkuEx49pZZvqm30yP4VbMGe1XLLhi70vwmnS-HMFXD_ikpxWRZUzoBx4_Lg1KJyGh47OB1538L4RV4qJnLAaG_pauJ2ugv2qk5uW_gsDl8A-Q/s1600/Rattan+Counter+Stools_5_1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I found the stools on one of my regular craigslist perusals for "wicker | rattan" (a search for all posts with the words wicker <i>or</i> rattan - check out <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2012/05/advanced-craigslist-searching.html">this post for more advanced searching tips</a>). The brass and rattan frame was perfect, but the upholstered cushions were... ahem... not doing it for us.<br />
<br />
But THAT, my friends, is an easy fix.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcEcXAw9debKZgKKbWefNddgVKdNXsvSHkCfgNV9J3jZd5s3IhQUZ_4MfABf9XB3o2z7Zq0iQc3c9Yxb-b_vx5bjEh9_V5XhopJkXaRzzcChgAbQEegw5CvJVo4v61cP62_nBXp_J2bNo/s1600/Reupholster+Before+After.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcEcXAw9debKZgKKbWefNddgVKdNXsvSHkCfgNV9J3jZd5s3IhQUZ_4MfABf9XB3o2z7Zq0iQc3c9Yxb-b_vx5bjEh9_V5XhopJkXaRzzcChgAbQEegw5CvJVo4v61cP62_nBXp_J2bNo/s1600/Reupholster+Before+After.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Initially, I wanted to use dark blue velvet on the seats, but after looking at the prices of upholstery grade velvet, I decided to cover the cushions in a <i>much less expensive</i> fine navy blue corduroy. From a distance the fabric looks like velvet, but it's a lot easier to clean and I won't want to cry if someone spills spaghetti sauce on it.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoNjxFGLhvtK5TSJGg6occUjogFmrUw6Vi_VTufhbQxmpoGkUPbifRVv9JHYhsPOWbucDTv1Bw1GI9NQiyXNtoL2EST6g4itYXK9uCcVgt1EVaLCgAY-7R2yjxtfU1fUU6RVWxxoHsUQo/s1600/Rattan+Counter+Stools_2_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoNjxFGLhvtK5TSJGg6occUjogFmrUw6Vi_VTufhbQxmpoGkUPbifRVv9JHYhsPOWbucDTv1Bw1GI9NQiyXNtoL2EST6g4itYXK9uCcVgt1EVaLCgAY-7R2yjxtfU1fUU6RVWxxoHsUQo/s1600/Rattan+Counter+Stools_2_1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
My basic reupholstery kit was a drill, pliers, screw driver, philips head screw driver, staple gun, and seam ripper. Seat cushions are the easiest way to dip your toe into the world of reupholstering. The trick is to make sure the seat is relatively easy to remove. Mine just screwed right off.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJq0InsoKbRv4R-ehg7PELOxCGdqNbK-GbOLv2VbUnWdFag6igFLEXypLeKiA8ICqj8rU16rRcnzuKnVZImgXqDzD0LAF7WMpb_Tuop57Rzb49GqEiXid54p6YZX077U-Yz5msPAPS2ow/s1600/Rattan+Counter+Stools_1_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJq0InsoKbRv4R-ehg7PELOxCGdqNbK-GbOLv2VbUnWdFag6igFLEXypLeKiA8ICqj8rU16rRcnzuKnVZImgXqDzD0LAF7WMpb_Tuop57Rzb49GqEiXid54p6YZX077U-Yz5msPAPS2ow/s1600/Rattan+Counter+Stools_1_1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Use the screw driver to carefully dismantle the seat, removing all of the staples and the old fabric. Once you've removed the old fabric, use the seam ripper to carefully deconstruct it - these separated pieces will be the pattern for your new cushions. Once you've cut the cushion pieces out of your new fabric, reverse the whole process and reassemble your cushion.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm-WYyNpM8sHOETAkk219NAEkiDsbOZUth8yYlRZ60NkedZ7-8UrDRrwpB-UgnV5Fzgk1VTllx0_O6UuGvxRPwyMlmgzJPa2r0P7-DTqaYHUjVuz9DCYhTCK2D7dgvLc-pMlb5EgJNCac/s1600/Rattan+Counter+Stools_4_1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm-WYyNpM8sHOETAkk219NAEkiDsbOZUth8yYlRZ60NkedZ7-8UrDRrwpB-UgnV5Fzgk1VTllx0_O6UuGvxRPwyMlmgzJPa2r0P7-DTqaYHUjVuz9DCYhTCK2D7dgvLc-pMlb5EgJNCac/s1600/Rattan+Counter+Stools_4_1.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
If you're worried you might lose track of things, write down every step you take while disassembling the old cushion. Or better yet, take photos.<br />
<br />
In the end, I bought each of the stools for $16 and spent about $30 on fabric and thread, for a grand total of around $78 or $26 per stool. Not too shabby considering remotely similar stools online are going for $200 each!<br />

I'm really excited to have finished a huge thing on my to-do list... category pages on insideways! If you saw a really strange post in your reader yesterday, that was a little *ahem* misfire from me while I was working on these category pages. Oops! Now, they're up and functional in the sidebar. Hopefully they make browsing insideways a little more pleasant and fun. <br />

My name is Jen and this blog is where I share the results of my thrifting, crafting, DIY, and home decor passions. I'm always striving to learn new things! But really, let's get down to it. My favorite part of seeing a beautiful space, is the before and after comparison. Shall we? ...<br />

<br />
With my surging interests in whicker, vintage inspired florals and (according to my sister) all things granny, I guess it's pretty predictable that I would feel the need for a little macrame in my life.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Cx1xIBOkuLJcrgeIbpqni8f5Jl6CgxNFLmLw8GdVVsZsEzS_S17mkuYzw97ZeO9uJj3irVzqoEuaEL4Y85mjpz9x7M-VCANu1V2YZVtLuPfnsCTxkUTU2939aA2y6rYFRux8CUa7Ua8/s1600/macrame+and+bar+cart_5+copy+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Cx1xIBOkuLJcrgeIbpqni8f5Jl6CgxNFLmLw8GdVVsZsEzS_S17mkuYzw97ZeO9uJj3irVzqoEuaEL4Y85mjpz9x7M-VCANu1V2YZVtLuPfnsCTxkUTU2939aA2y6rYFRux8CUa7Ua8/s1600/macrame+and+bar+cart_5+copy+small.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
When I <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2013/03/small-changes-and-perfect-plants.html">hung a beautiful stag horn fern in my dining nook corner,</a> I tried my hand at a <i>very</i> temporary macramae hanger - a stand in while I looked for a vintage macrame hanger from etsy.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihJPhZ44koiTPKakzgW81uSS1cLKctn44VODwvuw9NpBRqn8YeZojFNzNmUV7aI5af0glPQHmmpmI5ZyLQwv71G0JOQTzRBykqPuHyf2FdJUwuFGCK9lLhxFs6_Vc2u4fhM-JuZQVWlBM/s1600/staghorn+fern_6+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihJPhZ44koiTPKakzgW81uSS1cLKctn44VODwvuw9NpBRqn8YeZojFNzNmUV7aI5af0glPQHmmpmI5ZyLQwv71G0JOQTzRBykqPuHyf2FdJUwuFGCK9lLhxFs6_Vc2u4fhM-JuZQVWlBM/s1600/staghorn+fern_6+small.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
After a couple of weeks of occasionally perusing etsy I still hadn't found the perfect plant hanger for the perfect price. So... I decided to make my own!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgsyYo5pxMujLgXsr6EYbJh-BJxUgTrGw48II4-_KnCMFK-P8xHeBp7tOBkxvcvyXpl_0CgEsdjDsfNabTjOiLDUb2FbnT5TQ2x96u0r6v8UTZ581o1a4jRYQVqgqTq2osg5aKsn2_kbU/s1600/macrame+and+bar+cart_7+copy+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgsyYo5pxMujLgXsr6EYbJh-BJxUgTrGw48II4-_KnCMFK-P8xHeBp7tOBkxvcvyXpl_0CgEsdjDsfNabTjOiLDUb2FbnT5TQ2x96u0r6v8UTZ581o1a4jRYQVqgqTq2osg5aKsn2_kbU/s1600/macrame+and+bar+cart_7+copy+small.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I didn't use any particular methods or patterns, I just looked at a lot of photos then went for it! I did research a few knots to use. The best resource I found was <a href="http://free-macrame-patterns.com/">Free-Macrame-Patterns.com</a>. The site is a little... out of date, but it's a GREAT resource! Here's a link to all of the knots >>> <a href="http://www.free-macrame-patterns.com/learn-macrame.html">here</a>.<br />

The dining nook is turning into one of my favorite rooms in the whole apartment. In fact, it's probably time for a good ole before and after with that space... I'll get on that ;)<br />
<br />

Summer is here - the perfect time for sipping cool cocktails while enjoying an evening breeze. I've recently declared myself our family's mixologist and am slowly mastering a few delicious drinks (hello Moscow Mule!).<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3UZARiWkfsCQKRywTzGRFh26o9Vl2j52vQYY8aaMO7afeFciFhFmYo6e-IRZZhuN6T34cm0CQDugindf6_1O4gP9Heps5JopIn0KSqAKGFLpHpObx0vMvJr7uKhsnA2qyxfnbkzoLtSc/s1600/macrame+and+bar+cart+copy+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3UZARiWkfsCQKRywTzGRFh26o9Vl2j52vQYY8aaMO7afeFciFhFmYo6e-IRZZhuN6T34cm0CQDugindf6_1O4gP9Heps5JopIn0KSqAKGFLpHpObx0vMvJr7uKhsnA2qyxfnbkzoLtSc/s1600/macrame+and+bar+cart+copy+small.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
The whole process has been all the more enjoyable because I found the perfect little bar cart for our dining nook. Brass with walnut veneer? Yes please.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5_ANjlD4o5UnWRATnyXcMrOU8adUkE2PvZE6MxlL0_F0sISIuuQCKKnZ8kQgR2RP8VS3T1CeNvp8FR1V1ur03GwjC6FzFo80xAELSEufQ9_u7i9YZiy0CHbE3VEZlHP89dyp1ixTBo7U/s1600/macrame+and+bar+cart_2+copy+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5_ANjlD4o5UnWRATnyXcMrOU8adUkE2PvZE6MxlL0_F0sISIuuQCKKnZ8kQgR2RP8VS3T1CeNvp8FR1V1ur03GwjC6FzFo80xAELSEufQ9_u7i9YZiy0CHbE3VEZlHP89dyp1ixTBo7U/s1600/macrame+and+bar+cart_2+copy+small.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Tim and I took our time looking for a cart that a) fit the specific dimensions of our dining nook b) looked awesome and c) was affordable. We stubbornly held out for one that fit all three requirements and I'm really glad we did. You also may have noticed, I also tried my hand at a macrame plant hanger - more on that soon ;)Jennifer Bewersehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01132122273107101332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5502330229894959102.post-596785116164462422013-07-15T13:51:00.000-07:002013-08-04T16:19:44.054-07:00Green ThumbI've become the kind of person who announces how many new leaves her beloved plants are currently growing whenever her husband comes home. <br />
After watching them from afar in a blog-photo love affair, I bought my first fiddle leaf fig tree in August of 2011. As you can see in the photo below, it was 14 leaves of amazing.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXLS0niBkfVqqjuNVrTlR2YYVPwkVZZ-m_qgwohasSEtLKuzQhR6QeG2trh95QY5WJZucynL54Tf0ykO4p6UF6Y73QkGJJlml5I2WKdqdki5yNdFKbbjEWIVHwZPFwlUjc8b4MHA2fq1s/s1600/Fiddle+Leaf+Fig+Tree+copy+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXLS0niBkfVqqjuNVrTlR2YYVPwkVZZ-m_qgwohasSEtLKuzQhR6QeG2trh95QY5WJZucynL54Tf0ykO4p6UF6Y73QkGJJlml5I2WKdqdki5yNdFKbbjEWIVHwZPFwlUjc8b4MHA2fq1s/s1600/Fiddle+Leaf+Fig+Tree+copy+4.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
By February 2012 it had managed to perk up a little and had grown a few inches (as seen below from my <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2012/02/outdoor-living-porch-reveal.html">little porch reveal</a>)...<br />
<br />

<br />
When we made the big move to <a href="http://www.insideways.com/2012/04/meet-new-place.html">our new place</a> a little over a year ago (May 2012) my little figgie was doing pretty well at about 3ft tall.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkxP6H1ikPcFPE6obCmyZT2sY_tuSkUzO0DXE3IAPZtDUFWIeFIpbjKkYJfbw-25gZc-DH4aPfGVQIvJVn2l70an5XqefDROf6JzJwTWdHySD7DAxl4P1aWFsUxuOYvo9Wjfy-8HpWq4I/s1600/Fiddle+Leaf+Fig+Tree+copy+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkxP6H1ikPcFPE6obCmyZT2sY_tuSkUzO0DXE3IAPZtDUFWIeFIpbjKkYJfbw-25gZc-DH4aPfGVQIvJVn2l70an5XqefDROf6JzJwTWdHySD7DAxl4P1aWFsUxuOYvo9Wjfy-8HpWq4I/s1600/Fiddle+Leaf+Fig+Tree+copy+3.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Well... it loves the new place as much as I do. Commence super growth! Here it is about a foot taller and full of new leaves in August 2012.<br />
